Musical Guests

Sorcha & The Clearing

Sorcha & The Clearing

Sorcha’s “sultry and jazzy” voice captures the blues, jazz and country influences in her music. Wielding acoustic guitar and claw hammer banjo, this 2012 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist “unveils a suite of musical styles that shows a wide-ranging songwriting ability. . . witty verses with smart rhymes” (Portland Pheonix).

An old piano in the laundry room in her artsy, rural coastal Maine home fueled her propensity to create. Having come to songwriting following a significant loss, Sorcha is committed to empowering people to use creative expression to support healing through loss or transition. She continues to deepen and expand her collaborations with the Center for Grieving Children, assisted living facilities, schools and artists from all genres. Her third and latest release, Laughing Lamenting (2010), is a half-solo, half-duo celebration of loss and growth.

Sorcha has shared the stage with Edie Carey, Tab Benoit, Tom Rush, Obo Addy and the late Bill Morrissey. Her music has taken her from Portland, Maine’s Old Port Festival to Boston’s Club Passim and Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY to the streets of Nashville

In a powerful blend of technique and soul, this Vermont couple presents traditional world folktales as duo narrative performance, interwoven with traditional Celtic music on harp and concertina. Tim and Leanne have been featured on Vermont public television and radio and at major festivals across North America, including the The National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough TN. Their storytelling recordings have won Parents' Choice, American Library Association and Children's Music Web awards, and have been well reviewed in a variety of publications. By combining their voices, sensibilities, and creative talents, the duo has developed a form of entertainment that is truly magical, with a unique ability to transcend boundaries.

Willem Lange
Willem Lange

White-Footed Mouse

Will Lange has lived in New England for over fifty years, working everywhere from the lumber woods in the Adirondacks and the coastal islands of Maine to the ivied halls of Dartmouth College. He was born in 1935, a child of deaf parents, he grew up speaking sign language and first came to New England to prep school in 1950 as an alternative to reform school in his native New York State. All through his travels he has picked up stories — hundreds of them — about this unique place and the complicated, reticent, dry-humored people we call Yankees.

At the May 12th Cold River Radio Show, Willem will be talking with host Jon Sarty about Will’s latest book, The White-Footed Mouse,  which is Will and Bert Dodson’s latest collaboration, a delightfully illustrated parable for lovers of nature and the great outdoors and for kids who want to keep their parents in line.

Folk Duo

Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards
Mark Mandeville &
Raianne Richards

Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards are a folk duo from Massachusetts who sing songs which resonate with the lover of Americana and old country music, commanding familiar traditional melodies and poignant, introspective lyrics, and backing them with delicate arrangements on ukulele, clarinet, guitar and banjo. They began in the basements, coffee shops and art spaces of New England, and have since tested the stages of more traditional folk music venues, colleges, living rooms and bar rooms from Boston to Austin, Denver to Nashville, Asheville to Portland, and back 'round again. Hundreds of concerts have been given and thousands of records have been sold, all on their own steam and without the support of major industry assistance. Over the years, Mandeville & Richards have shared the stage with acts like John Gorka, Joan Osborne, Mustard's Retreat, Atwater & Donnely, Antje Duvekot, The Low Anthem, David Wax Museum and Brownbird.
